Begining in 2011, Run to Hear held its inaugural 5K run/walk at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, Texas on June 25th of that year. Our beneficiary was the Colorado Neurological Institute’s Cochlear Implant Assistance Program, which assists hearing impaired individuals anywhere in the United States who have no insurance and who may not qualify for government assistance programs obtain a cochlear implant. Through a cooperative effort of the three cochlear implant manufacturers, Cochlear Americas, Advanced Bionics and MED-EL, as well as a team of dedicated medical professionals, this program is able to assist qualified candidates needing cochlear implants. The 2011 Run to Hear raised $11,000, which went toward helping a 16-year-old Amish girl in Iowa obtain a cochlear implant. The event was successful beyond our wildest hopes, not only as a fundraiser, but also as a remarkable growth opportunity for the teens who came up with the idea and saw it through to completion. The kids, who call themselves The Deaf Club, were so excited about what they were able to accomplish that they decided to do the 5K again, and make it an annual event.
